What is KaHuna massage?
I’ve spent ten years trying to figure out how to explain Ka Huna massage in Bondi. But it’s hard to put some things into words. How do you explain the kind of relaxation and nurturing that you experience during this Hawaiian massage? The sense of being held, cradled, rocked and loved back into all that you are? Not by the practitioner, but by mother earth, or something greater than just us. Or the ease you feel when you go back in to your life more embodied, less tangled up in your thinking, more grounded and centred than when you arrived?
Ka Huna Massage was created by a radical Hawaiian Kahuna called Abraham Kawaii. He developed it as transformational bodywork, both for the giver and receiver. He drew on traditional Hawaiian massage, or lomilomi; Hawaiian martial arts, and Hula. He travelled the world, controversially teaching non-Hawaiians, and spread this amazing work, even as far as Bondi!
Ka Huna massage is a journey into yourself and after 10 years of practicing, Jae is a master at opening the doorways for you. Breath by breath you let go of the surface layers of thinking and drop into a felt sense of who you are, into a place that’s beyond the details of the story of your life. A place beyond the day to day demands of all your responsibilities – relationships, work, kids, lack of kids, physical pain and discomfort, stress, anxiety and depression. It’s a magical place of time out of time where your body-mind can heal itself. Long rhythmic strokes above and below the full length of your body lull you into a deep state of relaxation. Body, mind, heart and soul reconnect and realign, bringing a deep sense of wholeness and healing.
What’s a typical treatment?
While every treatment is different, there are a few things that are good to know before you start:
- Traditionally Ka Huna is received without any clothes on, but your modesty is protected with a sarong. Some practitioners work with clients completely naked, but we don’t – so please don’t ask. Although quite sensual, Ka Huna is not sexual.
- The massage is done underneath the body, as well as on top of it. We’ll go under your belly, legs and back at different times. This is unusual, sometimes ticklish! But also incredibly nurturing.
- The belly is always touched! Even if we don’t work deeply into the belly, Ka Huna always includes some kind of belly work, so it’s best not to have a big meal just before a treatment. Save that for after when eating a delicious, wholesome meal can be a great way to ground your energy.
Why choose a Ka Huna massage with Bondi KaHuna?
So, why have a Ka Huna massage? And why with me? I’ve been a bodyworker for ten years now. I started massaging when I started studying psychology, ten years ago. I never really intended to be a bodyworker, but true to Abraham’s intention, it has been radically transforming for me, and once I started, I couldn’t stop. It has helped me find a stillness, peace and love I didn’t know I needed.
Now, combined with a passion for understanding my own and general human experience, I work with the body and the mind to help you live a better, easier, more embodied life. Ka Huna can help. It’s not a silver bullet, a panacea for all your troubles. But it can give you breathing space, and it has a little bit of magic, that is really hard to put in to words.
